In conversation with Roni Size: 10 tracks that influenced NEW FORMS

Roni Size is one of the few figures in UK music who really needs no introduction. However, for those who need a reminder…

Distilling his roots in the Jamaican community in Bristol with the Acid House, Rave and Jungle sounds of the ’90s, Roni Size became one of the most influential figures in the emerging drum’n’bass scene. Reaching a wider audience than ever before, his collective Reprazent won the Mercury Prize for their 1997 debut New Forms on Talkin’ Loud.

Roni Size makes his return to SW4 this August Ban Holiday Sunday celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ground-breaking album ‘New Forms’ performing a special live performance with full instrumentation and jaw-dropping visuals...

To celebrate what is set to be one of the highlights of the festival, we asked him to pick 10 tracks that influenced his seminal album New Forms.

The result is an incredible mix of rarities and real gems!

New Forms’ influences in 10 records? That’s a tough one but here is a small sample of the records that inspired the album in some way from back then. To be honest, I’d really prefer to you to listen to the playlist and see what you can hear for yourselves but I’ll try and give a little context where I can. Some of these records I sampled on tracks like ‘Share The Fall’ and ‘Destination’ while others were just big influences for me. ‘Worst Comes To Worst’ was the first Gangstarr record I heard and Guru then went on to introduce me to Bahamadia (who performed on ‘New Forms’) while it was Giles Peterson who first gave me a copy of ‘Manha’ by Azimuth. ‘Sands Of Time’ by SOS band is a record filled with memories for me and I was fascinated by this early electronic sound. ‘Open Field Attack’ is included as one of many hip-hop influences on my roots and obviously links back to the classic ‘Scorpio’. Just take a listen to the The John Barry Orchestra and you’ll know why I included it - ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ is one of my favourite film soundtracks.

Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band - Scorpio

Moloko - Boo

Dilated Peoples & Gangstarr - Worse Comes To Worst

The John Barry Orchestra - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

Everything But The Girl - Each & Everyone

Azimuth - Manha

SOS Band - Sands Of Time (Full Album)

Omni Trio - Feels Good

Jocelyn Brown - Somebody Else’s Guy

Tuff Kru - Open Field Attack

Catch Roni Size at SW4 on Sunday 26th of August for a very special show celebrating 20 years of New Forms
