* ABOVE & BEYOND * CONFIRMED FOR SW4! |
Making their South West Four debut and completing this year’s incredible line-up are the World’s No.4 ranked DJs – Above & Beyond. There are DJs who can rock a party, a club, a festival. And there are acts that can write songs that will bring out the goose bumps in you. But there’s only one group that can do both... and that group is Above & Beyond. This 3-piece have remixed Madonna, won ‘Essential Mix of the Year’, and played to one million people in Rio de Janeiro. Above & Beyond will appear alongside Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, BT, Tall Paul and 16 Bit Lolitas in The Gallery Stage in association with Trackitdown.net. The Gallery remains Above & Beyond’s favourite destination in London and such is their popularity at the club that they were recently honoured with the “Best Headline DJ of 2008” Award at The Gallery end of year poll – voted for by the fans.
Above & Beyond recently won Best Group at the IDMA Awards, ahead of fellow nominees Daft Punk, Pendulum, Soulwax and Justice. The trio’s debut artist album, ‘Tri-State’, was released in 2006 to widespread acclaim (“In a word ‘Brilliant’” DJ Magazine) and more recently the group have released an album as ‘OceanLab’, in partnership with Justine Suissa. Above & Beyond’s peerless production skills and energetic DJ performances have seen them become one of the most in-demand acts in the dance scene today, headlining festivals all over the world and performing to 1 million people on New Year’s Eve in Rio, Brazil. Above & Beyond’s ‘Trance Around The World’ radio show (available here as a free podcast / http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=286889904), has reached No.3 in both the UK and US iTunes music podcast charts and is syndicated on over 120 FM stations worldwide, currently reaching around 20 million weekly listeners. In addition, Above & Beyond TV (www.youtube.com/aboveandbeyond) was recently launched and features exclusive content of the guys on tour, plus look out for the release of the OceanLab Remixes Album “Siren’s Of The Sea REMIXED’.
"It's our first SW4 and our first outdoor (or festival) gig in London, so we're doubly looking forward to this one." (Tony McGuinness, Above & Beyond)

JAMES ZABIELA & DARREN EMERSON JUST ADDED... |
SW4 fave James Zabiela is the final name added to this year’s mighty Main Stage. Last seen on the Common in 2006, James remains of the one most influential DJs on the circuit. New for 2009 is his ‘Masters’ compilation for Renaissance and his Positronic residency at matter. Since winning Muzik Magazine’s ‘Bedroom Bedlam’ competition back in 2001, James has carved out an impressive career with headline club and festival gigs all over the globe. He remains synonymous in pushing new musical technology, as proved when asked to test Pioneer’s new DJM800, CDJ1000MK3 and EFX 1000... and in 2007, James embarked on a huge worldwide tour with fellow SW4 DJ Nic Fanciulli to form the dream team ‘one+one’. Don’t miss James in the afternoon sun as completes his South West Four hat-trick.
Another major highlight not to miss will be the debut outing of cult DJ/Producer Darren Emerson in the Global Underground Stage. Darren is one of the most influential figures in dance music, a worthy accolade after a career spanning nearly 20 years and counting. At the age of 18, a friend introduced him to Rick Smith and Karl Hyde. The duo had been in a band together for several years and needed a new injection. And the rest is, well… Underworld! Signed to Junior Boys Own, the band released three albums: ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’, ‘Second Toughest in the Infant’ and ‘Beaucoup Fish’, selling over a million albums world-wide and spawning their hits ‘Cowgirl’, ‘Rez’, ‘Dark and Long’ and of course, ‘Born Slippy’ – all classics. Darren left the band in 2000 to expand his DJing and work with producers he was meeting on his travels across the world. The first collaboration saw Darren and SW4 headliner Sasha produce the Ibiza classic ‘Scorchio’ and his Underwater Records label became the house label of noughties, and his Underwater residency at The End was the stuff of legend. Earlier this year Darren released his 3rd Global Underground mix - ‘GU 36: Bogata’ and continues his unrelenting schedule of DJ gigs around the globe. Catch him exclusively at South West Four as the iconic dance star makes his highly anticipated debut.
FINAL ARTIST ANNOUNCED ON WEDNESDAY 13TH MAY!

* RICHIE HAWTIN * JUST ADDED! |
Having spoilt you enough already with the recent announcements of The Gallery and Ministry of Sound stages to this summer’s South West Four festival, we’re absolutely delighted to throw another unmissable name into the mix for 2009 in the shape of techno pioneer Richie Hawtin. Richie’s debut appearance at South West Four is sure to be met with universal approval, following the much-talked about set from his DJ peer Sven Vath at last year’s festival.
Richie Hawtin is techno's master of reinvention - positioning himself on the cutting edge of the genre for well over 15 years. His appeal is a combination of factors - innovative use of technology, experimentation tempered with an ability to rock a dancefloor, residencies at the best clubs each year, and his leadership of some of the most original record labels around. Introduced to computer-based music like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream at an early age by his father, Richie started DJing in Detroit clubs and radio stations, and in 1990 set up the seminal Plus-8 label with fellow Canadian DJ John Acquaviva. He developed his work under the Plastikman moniker, and established himself as one of techno's leading innovators through mix albums and his 'Concept' series of 12-inch releases. The subsequent years saw him release the DE9 series of mixes - the most recent one incorporating over 150 tracks and being realised in immersive 5.1 surround sound, as well as composing music which formed part of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Turin. Fast forward to the current day, and Richie Hawtin is at the helm of a new resurgence of techno - made buoyant by the popularity of minimal, Ibiza finding its cool again, [his label] Minus taking the world by storm, Berlin becoming a hub for like-minded musicians and artists, and Hawtin's co-conspirators Magda, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Vath etc all becoming cover stars in their own right. Some might say that he's lucky - but luck doesn't come into it - its sound evaluation of what's good in music, plus passion and innovation that keeps Richie Hawtin at the forefront of everyone's mind and in their DJ booth year in, year out. Richie will be headlining The End presents ‘Shake It’ Stage alongside Dubfire, Timo Maas, Steve Lawler, Layo & Bushwacka! and Nicole Moudaber.
FINAL LINE-UP ANNOUNCEMENTS COMING SOON!

THE GALLERY STAGE ANNOUNCED... |
* ARMIN VAN BUUREN * MARKUS SCHULZ * SPECIAL GUEST: BT * TALL PAUL * 16 BIT LOLITAS + VERY SPECIAL GUEST TBA
Quite simply London’s leading weekly club, The Gallery returns to South West Four this summer to host its very own stage for the 4th year running in association with Trackitdown.net. Establishing its reputation for ‘Excellence in the Art of Sound’ each and every Friday night at the legendary Turnmills for 13 years, The Gallery’s move to Ministry of Sound in April 2008 was greeted with open arms by DJs and clubbers alike. The line-up in The Gallery’s stage (as ever) wouldn’t look out of place on the main stage across any festival throughout the land. Having made such an epic impact last year, we’re thrilled to welcome back the world’s undisputed No.1 DJ Armin van Buuren to headline. The Gallery has long been Armin’s London home, and SW4 is now included as part of that extended family. "I’m very happy and excited to be back at one of the best festivals of Europe” says Armin. “I’ve always had amazing nights playing for the London crowd and the atmosphere at SW4 makes it even more magical.”
Armin will be joined by label mate Markus Schulz – who also returns to SW4 for the 2nd year on the bounce due to high public demand! Markus was recently voted The Gallery’s ‘International Resident of the Year’ and his popularity continues to sore all over the world. Next up is a debut show from the brilliant BT. The multi-talented US man is equally at home writing films scores for ‘Zoolander’, ‘Monster’ and ‘American Pie’ as he is with writing dancefloor anthems such as ‘Godspeed’, ‘Flaming June’, ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘Force of Gravity’. A regular at The Gallery at Ministry of Sound, his appearance is set to light up the Common. The biggest man at The Gallery (literally!), Tall Paul makes a special return to his Stage and there’s an early set from the incredible 16 Bit Lolitas... plus one more huge headline act to be announced!!

DAVID GUETTA, ERIC PRYDZ, DUBFIRE, TIMO MAAS & MORE JUST ADDED!! |
KISS 100 / MINISTRY OF SOUND MAIN STAGE ANNOUNCED...
DAVID GUETTA ERIC PRYDZ MARK KNIGHT SCARLETT ETIENNE + SPECIAL GUEST: SANDER KLEINENBERG
THE END STAGE PRESENTS ‘SHAKE IT’ DJS ANNOUNCED...
DUBFIRE TIMO MAAS STEVE LAWLER LAYO & BUSHWACKA! + MORE VERY SPECIAL GUESTS TBA
------------------------------------------------
KISS MAIN STAGE: HOSTED BY MINISTRY OF SOUND
New to South West Four this year will be the addition of the mighty Ministry of Sound co-hosting the Main Stage with SW4’s official radio partners KISS 100. The world famous south London club throw their considerable muscle behind the event as SW4 takes over clubland for the day. There simply isn’t a bigger club brand on the planet and over the past few years Ministry of Sound has cemented its reputation as London’s leading club with the acquisition of The Gallery to its weekly Friday nights backing up some impressive Saturday night residencies from the likes of Pete Tong’s ‘Wonderland’, Steve Angello’s ‘Size’, Sander Kleinenberg’s ‘This Is’, Steve Lawler’s ‘Viva’, Derrick May’s ‘Hi-Tec Soul’, David Guetta & Friends, Erick Morillo’s ‘Subliminal’ and Mark Knight’s ‘Toolroom Records’ to name a few. So... with Sasha & John Digweed playing their exclusive back to back set to close the festival in true SW4 style, this year’s headliners will be supported by some major DJ talent in the shape of David Guetta, Eric Prydz, Sander Kleinenberg, Mark Knight and Scarlett Etienne, with more names on the way!
Starting with main support, David Guetta... the French superstar has the lot. He’s the highest placed ‘house’ DJ in the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll - proudly sitting at No.5, he’s had 3 Top 20 singles in the UK charts with ‘Just a Little More Love’, ‘Love Don’t Let Me Go’ and ‘Love is Gone’, he hosted his very own DJ concert in the Stade de France for 40,000 people and with ‘F**k Me I’m Famous’, he hosts one of the coolest parties in Ibiza. Phew! This year South West Four’s finally got our man and we know he’s going to blow you away! Next up is Mr Pryda Records himself, Eric Prydz. The Swedish house mafioso is one of the world’s most complete DJ/Producers and returns by popular demand after an amazing debut back in 2007. With its lush piano riff, ‘Pjanoo’ was not only the track at South West Four last summer, but it was arguably the biggest dance record of 2008. Sander Kleinenberg is another returning hero having played twice before. His ‘This Is’ residency at Ministry of Sound continues to pack them in, and his audio/visual sets have been pushing the boundaries for many years now. Completing the Main Stage bill (for now!) are two hot new names for SW4 in 2009 – Mark Knight and Scarlett Etienne. Mark runs one of the globe’s favourite labels in Toolroom Records and his night at MOS is one of the busiest nights in the clubs history, whilst Scarlett is a DJ on the rise and has a big future ahead of her.
THE END PRESENTS ‘SHAKE IT’ STAGE
Joining Layo & Bushwacka! on the decks will be an all-star cast featuring some former resident DJs at The End, and all-round superstars! Step forward Dubfire, Timo Maas and Steve Lawler. Dubfire is the Deep Dish man gone solo, who’s causing a real ruckus with his more techno-tuned sets and ‘Sci-Tec’, his jaw-dropping new label. ‘Roadkill’ was one of the stand out tracks of 2008, and we’re delighted he’ll be making his SW4 debut alongside such great company. Another SW4 debutant will be Timo Maas, the Mutant Clan maestro. Timo held his 99% parties at The End for many years and describes his sound as “dark, trippy & funky electronic music”. His remix of Azzido Da Bass’ ‘Dooms Night’ remains a modern day classic, with newer joints appearing on Cocoon and Connaissaur. Steve Lawler on the other hand is a bit of a SW4 veteran and makes his 4th appearance on the day. His Harlem Nights party was something of an institution at The End, and he can now be found at Ministry of Sound hosting his new night. Look out for more line-up announcements in The End Presents ‘Shake It’ Stage soon!

THE END PRESENTS ‘SHAKE IT’ STAGE
New to South West Four this year is The End Presents ‘Shake It’ Stage in association with Timeout & Residentadvisor.net. The End was a symbol of London’s clubland, at the very fore-front of every major movement and purveyor of all things electronic and groovy. Sadly the world said goodbye to The End in January 2009 when the club shut, but the spirit and passion lives on with its owner Layo Paskin, who launched his new warehouse concept ‘Shake It’ in March. Layo & Bushwacka! are the first names to be announced in The End presents ‘Shake It’ stage with some seriously huge headline guests and support DJs to be announced very soon. “I was blown away by SW4” says Layo, referring to his debut set at last summer’s South West Four festival. “We had an early afternoon set and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was packed and had a great crowd and atmosphere. It was a highlight of my summer”.
THE GALLERY STAGE
Quite simply London’s leading weekly club, The Gallery returns to South West Four this summer to host its very own stage for the 4th year running in association with Trackitdown.net. Establishing its reputation for ‘Excellence in the Art of Sound’ each and every Friday night at the legendary Turnmills for 13 years, The Gallery’s move to Ministry of Sound in April 2008 was greeted with open arms by DJs and clubbers alike. The famous south London club was the natural new home for The Gallery and week in, week out, they continue to amaze with some of the biggest line-ups on the planet! The Gallery’s SW4 line-up will be announced at The Gallery’s 14th Birthday on Friday 24th April at Ministry of Sound where Armin van Buuren is amongst the headliners. You know from previous years that The Gallery has ALWAYS delivered the goods in this department, and we can confirm there are some MASSIVE names on the bill for this year!
GLOBAL UNDERGROUND STAGE
Debuting at South West Four in 2009 will be world renowned dance label Global Underground who host their own stage in association with Tilllate.com. The GU imprint is arguably dance music’s most established and iconic record label and has been synonymous with the world’s leading electronic artists since 1996! As such, Global Underground’s SW4 stage will feature an array of globe-trotting headliners alongside newer breakthrough talent from their current roster. “GU is happy to be bringing its sound to SW4” says the label’s main man Andy Horsfield. “It’s been a while since I found a festival good enough for us to want to be involved. Global Underground is proud to be hosting a stage this year at South West Four.”
Look out for a special appearance from GU master Danny Howells, who’s completed a hat-trick of releases on the label... ‘GU 27: Miami’, ‘GU Nu Breed’ and ‘GU 247’. Danny is also a seasoned veteran of South West Four, as is Nic Fanciulli who’ll be racking up his 4th appearance at SW4 this summer. Nic’s debut GU compilation is released at the end of April. Next up is Nick Warren, a GU man through and through. Nick has released more compilations than any other artist, as ‘Lima 35: Nick Warren’ became his 8th release in total! SW4 debutant James Lavelle is bringing up the rear with his 3rd mix set to drop later this year, plus there’s another debut on the day from the latest Nu Breed mixmaster Jim Rivers. Meanwhile, future superstar Anil Chawla makes his second SW4 appearance on the spin, following the highly acclaimed release of his debut album ‘Roadhouse’ (with partner Dale Anderson) on GU in February. And yet there’s more... look out for one final very special guest to be announced real soon. Mmmm?

|
SASHA & JOHN DIGWEED (BACK TO BACK) - UK FESTIVAL EXCLUSIVE |
The heat has just been cranked up this summer as London’s No.1 Dance festival South West Four can reveal that dance legends Sasha & John Digweed will be this year’s official headline act. Playing a UK Festival Exclusive B2B set, SW4 is the only festival in the whole of the UK where you’ll get to see both DJs playing together. Sasha & John Digweed will be closing the day’s events with a climatic final set on the main stage, as the day turns to night and the real fireworks begin!
2009 marks the 6th year of South West Four and the 5th year in a row for Bedrock supremo John Digweed. Quite simply a SW4 legend, John has played all but one of our festivals on the Common and remains very excited about making it 5 not out this summer... “It’s fantastic to headline this year’s SW4” says John. “I’ve been very lucky to play at nearly all of them, so this should be extra special. It’s a very well organised event that brings out a really cool crowd, and the line-ups always feature the cream of electronic talent. It’s not often you get to play a big outdoors gig in the centre of London and each year it seems to sell out quicker!!"
Having featured in DJ Magazine’s Top 10 poll for 10 consecutive years, John Digweed has pioneered the electronic house movement since the early 90’s, via his beloved Bedrock parties and headline-grabbing shows all over the world. It was way back in 1993 when a certain Alexander Coe (aka Sasha) heard his demo that the pair first met... and the rest as they say is history. The duo’s residency at Twilo and the Delta Heavy Tour in the US are the stuff of legend and their epic Northern Exposure CD (released 1996) is still widely regarded as the greatest mix compilation ever made.
Sasha has a similar up bringing in music to John, and like him was instrumental in evolving the progressive house scene. A Grammy nominated artist and acclaimed producer, Sasha has released some of the most memorable compilations of all time through cult labels Renaissance and Global Underground. He’s recently released the Invol2ver album through GU and was one of the first DJs to use Ableton technology in his sets. South West Four holds a special place in his heart having headlined the first ever festival back in 2004. He was back by popular demand to headline again in 2005 and again in 2007... but this year the mighty Sasha is back with John Digweed for this exclusive UK festival show!
“We don’t do that many festival shows together” continues John, “so we’re both really looking forward to SW4 as London is the clubbing capital in the UK and the crowd really know their music. We never really plan anything, but I’m sure there will be some surprises in our set!”
